It could come from the fact that you have formatted your external drive on the Mac, in a file system Windows can't read or write (HFS+ comes to mind). If you have the Mac version of a Windows program (such as Microsoft Office) it will likely save files in a format that can be read by your Windows computer (it will add the correct file extension). Your screenshot can t be saved mac. You can then transfer the file to your Windows computer and it should open up in the program assigned to that extension. To open a file on your Mac using a different program, navigate to the file you wish to open and right-click on it to see the file menu as shown below. When the file menu opens, click on the Open.
